On June 8th, 2020, London Ontario police shot and injured a black bear who was coming down from a tree. According to animal organizations, a bear coming down from a tree is not a threat; he was just trying to get away from a noisy crowd. Heavily armed police with shotguns and carbines should never have been involved with this case at all. The MNRF, Bear With Us Bear Sanctuary, and National Wildlife Centre were managing the situation just fine, and ultimately were able to save the bear's life. If Police were to be involved, they should only have had a crowd control and vehicle traffic control presence in this situation. The only ones handling the bear should have been the animal rescue agencies present. There needs to be a 24/7 civilian run wildlife rescue program in every municipality.
