It is time to stop the abuse and neglect of the Manukau Harbour in Auckland.
Please stop polluting its shallow waters with treated sewage and establish a Harbour Authority to be its Kaitiaki.
The Manukau Harbour is the second largest natural harbour in New Zealand, located to the west of Auckland.
The bulk of Auckland's treated sewage is discharged into the Manukau, and if the Central Interceptor Project goes ahead it will make matters worse.
Also occasional discharges of untreated waste pollute beaches and destroy wildlife: Beaches around the harbour are regularly closed due to poor water quality.
There are virtually no shore based facilities such as boat ramps, wharves and jetties; no navigational aids; no passenger transport; no interest from central or local government; no Harbour Board; and no plans for improvement.
The Ports of Auckland facilities at Onehunga are in a deplorable state of disrepair.
Despite the importance of the harbour to its local communities, Auckland Council is not meeting its responsibilites.
Auckland City Council needs to establish a Manukau Harbour Authority and stop abusing the Manukau Harbour.
