The IoM Department of Education, Sport and Culture are proposing to change the catchment area for Scoill yn Jubilee. At the moment, the school falls under Ballakermeen High Schools catchment area.
Under the proposal, the schools catchment area will become joint for Ballakermeen and St Ninians High Schools in academic year 2019/2020, and thereafter under the sole catchment area of St Ninians for subsequent years.
We strongly oppose this proposal as it will force the majority of young children at Scoill yn Jubilee who currently live in Douglas within walking distance of Ballakermeen to instead undertake a pointless journey either by car or bus to attend the lower school in Onchan. This proposal shows a complete disregard for the families that will be impacted. It makes zero sense to force students in central Douglas who would otherwise be walking to school to have to make this journey when there are other catchment areas - which have students who already have to travel by car or bus - that could easily be reclassified as part of St Ninian's catchment area with little to no detrimental impact. Furtrhermore the proposal is completely at odds with the governments stated policy of reducing unnecessary vehicle movements. Please help us ensure this proposal is defeated by supporting this petition.
