Duncan community calls on city leaders to officially address a mask mandate

Duncan community members are calling on Duncan City Manager Kimberly Meek and Duncan Mayor Ritchie Dennington to add an item to the Duncan city council agenda for the city council meeting scheduled Tuesday, December 8, 2020 which would allow city council members to discuss and vote on a mask mandate for the city of Duncan.

City council agenda items are added by the city manager based on the current need of the city, and with case numbers rising and hospital staff in danger of being overwhelmed, the need for a mask mandate to be formally addressed by city leadership has never been greater.

Please sign and share this petition advocating for an item addressing a mask mandate to be added to the agenda, and also contact City Manager Kimberly Meek and Mayor Ritchie Dennington by phone and email to voice your support.

Enough is enough. After the incredibly unproductive workshop, we are organizing a community action. We need you to help us. To be a part of the movement, email MasksforDuncan@gmail.com to be added to the email list. You will only receive emails from the local organizers of the planned peaceful protest to be held at a special meeting when one is called for a vote. It’s time for action, and we hope you will join us.

Please spread the word that although a mask discussion or vote is not on the agenda for Tues. Dec. 8, city leadership has heard you. A workshop held by council is scheduled for this Thursday, December 10 at 5:15, location TBD. This workshop will not culminate in a vote Thursday, but workshops are typically held to discuss the logistics of a measure and how it would work. Council will invite “experts” from the community to attend and the public can be present and speak.
    Please plan on attending.

We are less than 300 signatures from our goal! Please continue to share this petition within your circles, even if you’ve already done so. The more signatures and statements of support we gather, the better the chance members of city council and local leadership who support a mandate have of being effective and making sure your voices are heard. They need indisputable proof that a large percentage of the community supports a mandate. Thank you for your courage in speaking out!

In an interview yesterday with The Lawton Constitution, Mayor Dennington said there will be no mandate added to the agenda as 2/3 of the constituents he has spoken with are opposed to a mandate. He also stated that he personally believes masks have not been proven to be effective.

Though it is proving difficult to get in contact, please continue to call and email in order to show there is substantial support for such a measure. It will take all of our voices together to be successful.
