Demand the MNRF Ontario Upholds Ban on Biodiversity Offsetting

In Niagara Falls, a disturbing proposition is being offered by the municipal government. The proposition, innocuously named Biodiversity Offsetting, would destroy existing provincially significant wetlands to put in development, while "offsetting" the destruction with the creation, enhancement and/or expansion of another wetland.

While they proposal claims "no net impact" on the environment, we know that relocating local flora and fauna isn't as easy as a human moving houses. Currently, Biodiversity Offsetting is banned in the province of Ontario, but this proposal could set a terrible and dangerous precedent in the province for further development to undermine the long-term health of the environment.

To the Honourable Bill Mauro,

As a person who cares deeply for the natural world and recognizes the signficance and importance of wetlands, I am deeply concerned about the current proposed "biodiversity offsetting" in Niagara region.

Ontario has maintained a ban on this practice and I strongly think it is a good idea to ensure that this proposal doesn't stop that ban. Biodiversity offsetting is an ecologically unsound practice that will threaten wetland populations and will create a dangerous precedent for development in this province.
