Save the Endangered Stone Curlew!

A development plan drawn up by Breckland Council seeks to build 5,000 new homes on the north-east of Thetford, threatening the welfare of the stone curlew. The stone curlew is the most endangered bird in Norfolk, and has a special protection area to the south and east of the town. The Shadwell Estate, which lies just outside Thetford, argues that the current 1,500m buffer zone around the protection area is too small, as the birds nest up to 2,500m out of that area.

The Shadwell Estate brought their case to High Court Judge Mr Justice Beatson, with the support of the Thetford Town Council and many people in the town. Unfortunately, the judge dismissed their case on the grounds that there was no concrete evidence of the birds nesting outside the established protection area.

Protecting wildlife is in the best interests of Thetford and its citizens. Please sign the petition to stand against Breckland Council's development project and protect the endangered stone curlew.

As you know, a development plan drawn up by Breckland Council seeks to build 5,000 new homes on the north-east of Thetford. We believe that this plan will threaten the stone curlew, the most endangered bird in Norfolk. While we are aware of the bird's protected status, we believe that the current 1,500m buffer zone around the protection area is too small, as the birds nest up to 2,500m out of that area.

We understand that the Shadwell Estate brought a case against the development plan to High Court Judge Mr Justice Beatson, with the support of the Thetford Town Council and many people in the town. We are disappointed to hear that the judge dismissed their case on the grounds that there was no concrete evidence of the birds nesting outside the established protection area.

Protecting wildlife is in the best interests of Thetford and its citizens. We respectfully urge you to halt Breckland Council's intrusive development plan in favor of the endangered stone curlew and other native species.
