Ontario: Stand for Democracy and Update Your Political Fundraising Laws

Ontario right now is preventing a true democratic system in their province. The province has outdated election laws that still allow political parties to accept donations from corporations and unions. As well, current Liberal ministers are advertising fundraising dinners with high prices for "face-time" with the ministers.

This kind of fundraising causes a rift in Ontario's democracy. In Alberta, they recently had an overhaul of their political fundraising laws, making changes to ensure a more democratic process, including a ban on donations from corporations and unions. Federally, this practice has been illegal since the mid 1990s when Jean Chretien's government imposed a ban.

We demand that Ontario updates its political fundraising laws. We ask that

a) Ontario bans political donations from corporations and unions and

b) Ontario stops the fundraising platform of "pay-to-see" various ministers.

We understand that Ontario's democracy is weaker when money from corporations and unions are used to influence political policy. We see that the Alberta and Federal governments have banned this practice and we call on Ontario to follow suit.

We know that creating a system of donations for acces to ministers in this province does nothing to strengthen the democracy and places voices with more access to financial resources in the favour of ministers, weakening the influence of the under-privileged in this province. We call on you to stop this practice in its tracks.
