Restore General Education Seats in Firewheel Neighborhoods

Beginning with the 2016 – 2017 school year, Luna Elementary, located in The Greens neighborhood, will become one of two Montessori campuses in Garland ISD. This change will impact the Firewheel area neighborhoods that currently attend Luna. Next year, the 60 General Education Kinder seats available now at Luna will be displaced. Over the next 5 years, as the Montessori program rollout to subsequent grades completes, this will be a loss of over 350 General Education seats for the neighborhoods.

At the Board of Trustees meeting on March 22, 2016, the Board rejected the Garland ISD Administration’s proposal that would have allowed for these General Education seats to be moved to Abbett and Armstrong Elementaries, the other two schools located in the Firewheel area neighborhoods. The result of this vote means that families living close to the Firewheel area will face 60 fewer available seats in local (within the 2 mile walk radius proximity) schools and will be forced to accept seats at what ever campus has an available General Education seat and the longer commute that goes with it.

This petition is requesting that the Garland ISD Board of Trustees replace General Education seats lost by Luna’s transition to Montessori with General Education seats at schools in the Firewheel area, north of President George Bush Turnpike.
