Greece has just done something remarkable: it has become the first Orthodox Christian country in the whole world to (finally) legalize same-sex marriage, and the 37th nation overall to take such a step. This moment is long overdue but a wonderful milestone to celebrate nonetheless.

Now it's time for other Orthodox Christian and Mediterranean countries to finally do what's right, too - it's time to legalize same sex marriage in these nations as well!

The fact that this still needs to be an argument anymore is outrageous. Love is a powerful force of nature that deserves all of our respect and awe. It should be encouraged - not criminalized, denied, or pushed into hiding.

Without marriage protections, same-sex couples are at risk in a whole range of frightening ways. Visitation in hospitals, decision-making power in medical situations, immigration status, and even adoption and parental rights are all implicated and threatened without the legal protections afforded by marriage.

On top of that, there is a strong link between legalizing same-sex marriage and finally combating the heartbreaking stigma attached to being a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Queer people all over the world are at some of the highest risks for suicide and self-harm, due to society's homophobic hatred that becomes internalized into shame and self-loathing.

In contrast, research has shown that legalizing gay marriage can actually reduce suicide rates! After Sweden and Denmark legalized same-sex marriage there in 2009 and 2012, respectively, the suicide rates among queer people in those countries fell by approximately 50%.

Meanwhile, legalizing same-sex marriage is a powerful way for nations to affirm the equality, dignity, and basic rights of all people. Love knows no bounds, and should never be the justification for punishment or denial of rights.

We shouldn't have to keep explaining this. There's no excuse for continuing to treat queer love as inferior or queer people as second-class citizens. Love is love is love, and it's time for all Mediterranean and Orthodox Christian countries to follow Greece's example and legalize same-sex marriage! Sign the petition now!
