May is Lupus Awareness Month!

Lupus - a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any organ or tissue - affects approximately 5 million people worldwide. There is no cure.

While anyone can develop this disease, it primarily targets women (some 90% of reported cases). Persons of color are also more likely to have lupus.

Diagnosis is often difficult, as symptoms may vary wildly person to person. Many patients must see numerous doctors over several years prior to receiving an official diagnosis (misdiagnosis is also common).
