Math above arithmetic level is literally unnecessary for some people, myself included, as an individual currently in school to pursue a degree in Legal Studies. So why is it that those of us who are choosing to study and look for a career in a completely unrelated subject, still forced to take higher level math courses? A recent report written by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) stated that "about 50 percent of students do NOT pass college algebra with a C or above." This is a tragic situation for students who not only do not need higher math skills in the career field they're pursuing but are also genuinely having a hard time getting the work. With this course being the most unsuccessful subject, we, as a nation need to raise awareness to this issue and put this burdening curriculum that says all students must take higher math courses regardless of their majors, to an end. After a certain level, math should be optional and only required for those who will be seeking a degree in a mathematical relating degree.
