People were outraged when Chris Brown posted a video on Instagram of his young daughter, Royalty, cradling his new pet: a baby capuchin monkey named Fiji.

It's inhumane to keep primates as pets because it deprives them of their natural social, physical and developmental needs. What's worse is that baby capuchins sold as pets are often forcibly taken from their mothers when they're just a few days old. Their mothers grieve for months.

It's also dangerous to keep monkeys as pets. The Humane Society of the United States reports that between 1990 and 2013, more than 230 people were injured by them, including 70 children. Primates can also spread serious diseases to humans.

For these reasons, exotic pets like capuchin monkeys are banned in California, where Brown lives. When the state Department of Fish and Wildlife heard about Fiji, it confiscated the capuchin. Brown has been charged with the misdemeanor crime of keeping an exotic pet without a permit. He could spend up to six months in jail.

As for Fiji, news reports say she was taken to an undisclosed facility. Some wildlife sanctuaries are filled with former pets like Fiji that have been confiscated or abandoned.

Please sign and share this petition urging Brown, who has a net worth of $30 million, to make a generous donation to a wildlife sanctuary to help cover the costs of caring for these animals.
