We have been astonished that our bank and ATM on Tilos will be closed. We hope that the Greek government will intervene and prevent this as it will be a disaster for our lovely island.
It will have big consequences if we have to travel to Rhodes or Kos whenever we need to raise money. Firstly, it takes a boat trip of at least two hours each way for a return trip between 27 € and 52 €. In addition, it will often require an overnight stay, as there is only one ferry per week, departing from Tilos in the morning and coming back in the evening.
We also fear that there will be huge costs for the shops at Tilos, as the inhabitants of Tilos will make their purchases while they are on Rhodes.
We know that there are only two employees in the bank at Tilos, but it will be impossible for these two to find other jobs on the island.
Tilos is developing well, with many young families making their homes here, and increasing numbers of tourists annually. This will change over a few years without a bank on the island. Result: a deserted island! Is that what the government wants?
