Canada: Don't Force Field Roast Veggie Sausage to Test on Animals!

Field Roast, a vegan mock meat company offering veggie sausage, holiday roasts, and other alternative products, is banned in Canada for refusing to conduct required tests on animals.

The Canadian government requires certain "simulated meat" products to conduct a Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) study on live animals to evaluate their protein content. Additionally, simulated sausage sold in Canada must contain a minimum protein content of nine percent, so Field Roast would have to add chemical supplements to their product to meet required standards.

Field roast clearly marks their products as vegan and lists nutrition and ingredient information, so no one would mistake their products for meat sausage. Mock meats are especially important for new vegetarians and vegans, who use the products to transition easily to an animal-free diet. Products like Field Roast show meat eaters that you don't have to sacrifice flavor or your favorite recipes to go vegetarian or vegan.

Holding mock meats to the same protein standards as real meats is not necessary. Forcing vegetarian companies to test on animals to meet an arbitrary protein requirement defeats the whole purpose of offering these products, as does forcing the addition of chemical supplements to all-natural vegetable-based foods. Please sign the petition to urge the Canadian government to stop forcing vegetarian companies to test on animals!

We, the undersigned, are concerned that Field Roast, a vegan mock meat company offering veggie sausage, holiday roasts, and other alternative products, is banned in Canada for refusing to conduct required tests on animals.

We understand that the Canadian government requires certain "simulated meat" products to conduct a Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) study on live animals to evaluate their protein content.

We feel that PER tests are unecessary. Forcing vegetarian companies to test on animals to meet an arbitrary protein requirement defeats the whole purpose of offering these products, as does forcing the addition of chemical supplements to all-natural vegetable-based foods. We respectfully urge you to stop forcing vegetarian companies to test on animals. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
