Tell the FDA to Ban Propylene Glycol in Pet Foods!

Propylene glycol is a synthetic compound that is used in some antifreeze (such as Sierra brand) and in several brands of dog food. Purina, for example, uses propylene glycol in most brands of food (such as Beneful) and treats to keep them moist. The FDA has determined propylene glycol is safe in small doses, although it has banned the use of propylene glycol in cat food.

The truth is, propylene glycol can cause kidney failure, lethargy, seizures, massive weight loss and tremors. Thousands of dogs have become extremely sick or died from ingestion of this poison. Since dogs generally stick with one type of food, over time, they get a buildup of propylene glycol in lethal doses. Since the FDA has not banned it, Purina refuses to remove it from their dog food brands despite public outcry. Thus, the FDA needs to be forced into banning it to protect our dogs' health. Tell the Food and Drug Administration to ban propylene glycol in pet foods now and save our loved ones from an agonizing death!

Dear Sir or Madam:

Propylene glycol is a poison that should not be permitted in pet foods.  Although it has been banned in cat food, tens of thousands of dogs become extremely sick of die annually from ingesting this poison.  Over time, propylene glycol builds up in dogs' bodies; thus, although they ingest a relatively small amount in each meal, they becomed slowly poisoned over time.

There are many, more natural, alternatives to keep foods and treats moist.  Most of the alternatives will not harm our beloved pets.  There is absolutely no justification for using propylene glycol except that it is inexpensive.  I will spend more to save my dogs' lives and most pet families feel the same.

Unless you enforce a ban on propylene glycol, makers of pet foods, such as Purina, will not cease using them despite public outcry.  Purina has, in face, issued a public announcement that since propylene glycol is permitted byt he FDA, they will continue to use it.  This is an outrage and we, the people, implore you to ban the use of propylene glycol as an act of compassion and humanity.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Jenn Kennedy
