Trudeau: Stop Subsidizing Climate Change

If you wanted to stop carbon emissions would you pay the oil and gas industry $19 for every tonne of carbon they emitted? This seems completely counterproductive and yet this is what the Canadian government is essentially doing with their subsidies to the oil and gas industry.

The Canadian government pays the oil and gas industry $3.3 billion dollars a year in subsidies, despite the Prime Minister promising to reduce carbon emissions and take real action against climate change. This subsidy directly prevents the government from meeting their commitment to put carbon pricing into effect by 2018, says a recent study by four major Canadian environmental groups.

This subsidy must stop immediately if Canada is to make any progress on their commitment to climate change. Sign today to stand for a clean future. By signing today you are sending a strong message that climate change should not be subsidized.

To Prime Minister Justin Trudeau,

As someone who is gravely concerned about climate change I demand that you remove all subsidies from the oil and gas industry immediately.

The $3.3 billion annual subsidy to the oil and gas amounts to giving $19 per tonne of carbon to polluters and goes against your proposed policy for carbon pricing in 2018.

This huge amount of money could be used to fund the green energy revolution that is needed in this country in order to reduce the impact of climate change.

This subsidy will also prevent the expansion of further polluting developments, such as pipelines, fracking wells and expansion of the Alberta tarsands.
