End Animal Abuse in Canadian Puppy Mills

Ever wonder where the adorable puppies in many pet stores came from? The answer is not a pretty one -- puppy mills. Canada is home to a multimillion-dollar puppy mill industry, which breeds not only puppies, but inexcusable cruelty on a massive scale.

In order to make the greatest profit possible, dogs are continuously bred in very poor conditions. The animals have no human contact and live in tiny, unsanitary cages that are sometimes stacked so that excrement and urine falls through, matting the poor animals' fur. Once the breeding adults are too worn out, they are often killed. Sadly, the industry sells many puppies with behavioral and chronic health issues.

What's worse, the horrible conditions of puppy mills are tolerated under current laws. Canada's Cruelty to Animals Act has gone basically untouched since 1892 and the outdated cruelty laws give very little punishment to puppy mill operators.

Ontario is the first and only province to enact legislation that covers puppy mills, increasing punishment for animal cruelty -- it's time to make this change on a national scale. Urge the Prime Minister and Justice Minister of Canada to revise the Cruelty to Animals Act and put an end to animal abuse in puppy mills.
Dear Prime Minister Harper and Justice Minister Nicholson,

Canada is home to a multimillion-dollar puppy mill industry, which breeds puppies as well as inexcusable cruelty on a massive scale.

Dogs are continuously bred in very poor conditions to make the greatest profit possible. The animals have no human contact and live in tiny, unsanitary cages that are sometimes stacked so that excrement and urine falls through, matting the poor animals' fur. Once the dogs are too worn out, they are often killed. Sadly, the industry sells many puppies with behavioral and chronic health issues.

The horrible condition of puppy mills are tolerated under current laws. Canada's Cruelty to Animals Act (criminal code 444-447) has gone basically untouched since 1892 and the outdated cruelty laws give very little punishment to puppy mill operators.
Ontario is the first and only province to enact legislation that covers puppy mills -- it's time to make this change on a national scale. Please revise the Cruelty to Animals Act and put an end to animal abuse in puppy mills. This injustice cannot continue.
