Proposals to cut earned benefits coming from prominent politicians these days are deeply troubling. Social Security and Medicare are threatened like never before.

Some legislators and presidential candidates are actually recommending cutting benefits through proposals ranging from raising the retirement age to changing the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) formula to outright privatization. If enacted, these cuts would be devastating for millions of seniors, survivors, people with disabilities and their families.

In this year of intense political activity, we have to make protecting Social Security a top priority.

Today's senior citizens have worked hard their entire lives with the promise of guaranteed benefits that are increasingly vulnerable. Any cuts to already modest earned benefits could leave millions of Americans with unprecedented financial hardship and stress.
