Curb carbon pollution from our newest top polluter: transportation
Transportation is now the number one source of carbon pollution in the United States. It's time our laws keep pace with this growing threat to our climate.
By now, the worst impacts of climate change are well known, but the stakes bear repeating: rising sea levels, droughts, more severe storms, and chaotic weather. To avoid the worst impacts of global warming, we must clean up transportation. A strong carbon pollution performance standard in the final proposed performance management rule for congestion and air quality and strengthening standards to maximize emissions reductions from our cars in the light-duty vehicles standards will put us on the right path.
The final transportation rule should require all state Departments of Transportation and Metropolitan Planning Organizations, to measure, set goals, report and reduce carbon pollution from all transportation projects as part of their long-term plans.

Thank you for considering cutting emissions from our transportation sector, the newest top global warming polluter.
To avoid the worst impacts of global warming, we must include a strong carbon pollution performance standard in the final proposed performance management rule for congestion and air quality (Docket #: FHWA-2013-0054)
The final rule should require all state Departments of Transportation and Metropolitan Planning Organizations, to measure, set goals, report and reduce carbon pollution from all transportation projects as part of their long-term transportation plans.
Furthermore, as the light-duty vehicle standards undergo a midterm evaluation, it's also critical that you work together to strengthen the standards to maximize emissions reductions from cars. (Docket #: EPA–HQ–OAR–2015–0827)
I hope your agencies will build on the administration’s climate legacy by strengthening vehicle standards and requiring state and local governments to set goals to reduce dangerous global warming pollution.
