End corporate payouts in Canada's trade agreements

In 2008, the community of Digby Neck, Nova Scotia, rejected a U.S. corporation's (Bilcon) proposed quarry project that would have seriously threatened the local environment, including a nursery of endangered right whales.

But it didn't end there. Following a secretive NAFTA tribunal ruling, Canada is now on the hook for upwards of $500,000,000 for failing to let Bilcon threaten our land and water.

Our petition calls for an end to these anti-democratic trade provisions that undermine our sovereignty.

With NAFTA under negotiation and the revived Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) soon to be ratified by the Liberal government, the time to act is now. These unjust trade dispute settlement mechanisms — which have already cost Canadian taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars — must be scrapped.

We must demand that free trade does not restrict our sovereign right to protect our land, air, and water. Join us to put an end to these anti-democratic measures by sending an urgent message to International Trade Minister François-Philippe Champagne.

Imagine what Canadians could do with the hundreds of millions in additional funding that could be saved! This money shouldn't be lining the pockets of foreign corporations like Bilcon; it should be paying for social programs and green infrastructure projects.

Target: The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne

I urge you to ensure that Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) mechanisms are absent from any trade agreements Canada signs or ratifies going forward.

ISDS threatens Canada's ability to legislate in the public interest, as corporate profits are prioritized over the laws that serve our communities and protect our environment.
