Stop the construction of the Koukoutamba dam that will devastate chimp habitat!

Please sign this petition to demand that Organisation pour la Mise en Valeur du Fleuve Senegal (OMVS) stop the construction of the Koukoutamba dam that will devastate chimp habitat. 

In the past 20 years, the population of the western chimpanzee has plummeted by more than 80 percent. This dam will have a devastating impact on these critically endangered chimpanzees, as it will destroy the Moyen-Bafing National Park - one of the last remaining protected areas for the western chimpanzee – by regularly causing flooding in an area twice the size of San Francisco.

The construction of the Koukoutamba dam in Guinea, West Africa, will also have immense human and environmental costs for the people living alongside the Bafing river. The dam will severely disrupt their social, behavioural, cultural, economic and political life. These communities depend on the Bafing river for their livelihood and for access to water. Moving them further away from the river will deprive them of their source of water or make it extremely difficult for them to access water.

We call on OMVS to cancel the contract with Sinohydro to build the Koukoutamba dam and instead opt to power our world with clean, renewable, and increasingly inexpensive renewable sources.
