Pledge To Keep Pets Inside During The Cold

This winter, frigid weather is battering the U.S. with punishingly low temperatures, ice, snow, and biting winds. Gut-wrenching stories of animals left outside to freeze are pouring in from around the country.

In Illinois, a black lab mix who lived outside gave birth to eight puppies in frigid weather. Seven puppies succumbed to the bitter temperatures and winds, but the mother dog and one of her offspring managed to barely survive. In Ohio, a dog froze to death after being left outside in a doghouse that had no insulation. In Connecticut, cold claimed the life of a chained dog already malnourished and covered in feces.

Many think that the fur on their backs will insulate animals from suffering. But the truth is, without proper shelter, food and water, these domesticated animals' chances of survival in frigid temperatures is greatly decreased. They can quickly succumb to hypothermia, frostbite and can even die.

The first step toward ending this horrific suffering starts at home by pledging to always bring your pet inside during the cold. You can also help spread the word. If you encounter a pet left in the cold, politely let the owner know you're concerned. Some people genuinely don't know the risk that cold weather poses to animals. If someone you raise these concerns with responds poorly or their animals continue to be in danger, contact your local animal control agency.

Sign the pledge today to keep your pet inside during dangerous winter weather and help spread the word that animals need protection when temperatures plummet.
