Erin Mobley survived bladder cancer when she was only six years old.
And now, if Congress repeals significant parts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) without a strong replacement, she could be denied health insurance for the rest of her life.
Erin, a Ph.D. student at the University of Iowa, is only 30 years old. She’s thriving and excited about her future.
But, her ability to take care of herself – and one day, a family – are in jeopardy.
- As a cancer survivor, Erin is considered to have a pre-existing condition. Before the ACA, health insurance companies could deny her coverage because she survived cancer.
- And, as you’d expect, her cancer treatment and follow-up care weren’t cheap. With no replacement law, insurance companies could once again re-institute lifetime caps on coverage, ending Erin’s ability to get coverage.
