Ask the Senate to Protect People and Big Cats

We need a nationwide law to stop big cats kept in private hands from endangering communities.

There are at least 10,000 big cats in private ownership. The animals are often kept in squalid conditions and dangerously close to residential areas.

IFAW is working with Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) to pass the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act (S.1381). The Act will finally phase out a dangerous practice where thousands of people across the U.S. are allowed to keep tigers and other big cats as backyard pets and breed them for commercial exploitation in dangerous roadside zoos.

Please urge your U.S. senators to co-sponsor the bill today.
Dear [Your Senator],

I am writing today to urge your co-sponsorship of the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act (S.1381), introduced by Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and assigned to the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.

S.1381 will finally phase out a dangerous practice where thousands of people across the U.S. are allowed to keep tigers and other big cats as backyard pets and breed them for commercial exploitation in dangerous roadside zoos.

I am concerned that this situation continues to endanger our nation’s first responders. They are not trained nor financially equipped to deal with the likes of a 300-pound tiger when it escapes, and they shouldn’t have to bear this burden.

Captive big cats in the U.S. have so far killed 24 people (including five children) and nearly 300 additional people have been mauled or injured.

We can’t stand on the sideline waiting for the next tragedy.

Please co-sponsor S.1381 today.

Sincerely,
[Your name]
