Enbridge — the Canadian pipeline company responsible for the largest-ever oil spill on U.S. soil — has come up with an illegal scheme to nearly double the capacity of its Alberta Clipper tar sands pipeline and bypass the legally required environmental reviews.
Even more outrageous, the State Department has indicated that it will look the other way and allow this scheme to move forward.
Urge President Obama not to let Enbridge flout the law!
Dear President Obama,
Enbridge, a Canadian oil pipeline company, has devised a scheme to circumvent both the letter and the spirit of the law to significantly increase the flow of tar sands through its Alberta Clipper (Line 67) pipeline without federal review or oversight.
I was disappointed to hear reports that the State Department is aware of this scheme but has chosen to look the other way and let Enbridge increase the capacity of the Alberta Clipper before the environmental review and national interest determination for that project are completed. Even worse, it appears that the State Department is letting Enbridge build a brand new cross-border tar sands pipeline (an entirely new Line 3, next to the old one of the same name) without any review or permitting whatsoever!
I'm shocked that this scheme has been allowed to move forward behind closed doors, while at the same time the administration has repeatedly maintained that the official review process for Keystone XL must be completed.
Please demonstrate the your commitment to the law and your climate promises by ensuring that Alberta Clipper, Line 3, and any other new pipeline or pipeline expansion, undergo the appropriate environmental impact assessment and are not given permits if they harm our climate.
