CRISIS: Children At Risk In South Sudan

Mothers aren’t just afraid of the dangerous fighting that has engulfed South Sudan and uprooted 1.5 million from their homes. Unless things change, South Sudan will be devastated by famine – and 50,000 South Sudanese children under five years old could die from hunger and malnutrition.
CARE is on the ground delivering aid, but the fighting makes it difficult to get help to the people who need it most. Children are already dead and dying from hunger, and it could get much worse.
As a world leader, the United States must help during this humanitarian catastrophe. Tell your member of Congress that we must step in and help the South Sudanese people – getting them much-needed food and working toward an end to the violence. There’s no time to spare. Time is running out to help the people of South Sudan. Unless urgent humanitarian relief is provided, human-made famine is likely to ravage the country already suffering a brutal civil war. The results could be devastating. According to current estimates, 34 percent of the population is facing emergency food insecurity. Among them 50,000 children under the age of five years old could die by the end of the year, of hunger.
The United Nation's emergency funding appeal of $1.8 billion USD for life-saving activities and famine prevention has only been 41.1% funded. Every missing dollar is an opportunity lost to save lives.
We urge you to put pressure on all parties to the conflict to cease fighting and allow for humanitarian access, while also urging you to demonstrate leadership by increasing United States funding for the conflict and leveraging the support of US allies to do the same.
