Tell Congress: Oppose President Trump's public land budget cuts

President Trump's federal 2020 budget was released and it's looking bleak for public lands.

The president's budget proposes virtually eliminating the Land and Water Conservation Fund a critical funding source for conservation programs all across America—even though he signed the Natural Resources Management Act (S.47) into law ensuring the fund would be safe and permanently reauthorized! Unfortunately, permanent reauthorization does not mean the program receives funding—that happens when Congress finishes the budgeting process. If President Trump's budget is approved—the result will be devastating for public lands across the nation.

If Congress approves the proposed budget, the cuts in funding could affect the protection of outdoor spaces that ensure access to public lands for fishing, boating, biking, hunting, and bird watching.

For more than 50 years, the LWCF has helped fund the protection and management of everything from national parks and forests to close-to-home recreation areas. The program uses a portion of oil and gas companies' revenue from offshore drilling to safeguard open space — it doesn't cost taxpayers a dime. Under the law, the LWCF can receive up to $900 million every year.

Sign this urgent message to your representative in Congress: Oppose President Trump's deep budget cuts to protect the future of our public lands.

Dear [Member of Congress],

I am writing to express my strong opposition to President Trump's proposal to virtually eliminate America's best conservation program in the fiscal 2020 budget.

For more than 50 years, the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) has helped fund the protection and management of everything from national parks and forests to close-to-home recreation areas. This ensures every family has access to our country's iconic landscapes like the Tahoe National Forest, the Chattahoochee River, and the Appalachian Trail. Eliminating LWCF funding is absolutely unacceptable, leaving the future of our public lands at risk.

There is no economic justification for proposals that pull the rug out from ongoing collaborative local, state, and federal efforts aimed at supporting parks, trails, and other outdoor recreation needs. Public lands play a vital role in conserving and protecting our environment and economy, so I urge you, as my representative, to protect this critical resource and our public lands by allocating full funding to the LWCF in this year's budgeting process so we can protect public lands now and for future generations.
