Austin Needs Animal Police!!!

Update: There is a police unit in Austin BUT this is why you have never heard of it:
"The one detective in the unit is retiring and the other is not an officer...I think he is a civilian. That was your best bet. This unit is small and overworked and unless you have an emergency, that's it until APD decides animal cruelty cases are important.
I need to make a clarification. When I said APD needed to make the animal cruelty unit a priority, it's really the City needs to make the animal cruelty unit a priority. City leaders have demanded budget cuts to APD and I have done several stories about all the units affected and the shortage of patrol officers. There still aren't enough officers to work the streets."

Other major cities have Police Units specifically for dealing with Animal Abuse.
Since living in Austin I have been horrified by this cities lack of resources concerning this problem. If you call the police most times they tell you there is nothing they can do and they will pass it on to Animal Control. I don't think Police here know the laws for the State of Texas on animal abuse and negligence. Plus they are not equipped to do anything when they do respond. Other cities have responded to this issue by creating a division in the police department: Animal Police.
We NEED one here.
Please help me get this petition rolling. I am convinced that in a city that claims to love animals and be so animal friendly that we can do something to change this!! There needs to be education in the lower income communities where many of these abuses are happening.
Feel free to attach a story of animal abuse that you have witnessed in Austin. I know that I have many and have felt helpless. Repeatedly nothing was done to help these animals, no matter how many times I called the police. Thank you for your time and effort. We have to be the voice for those who can't speak!
