Tuko or not Tuko (Stop Illegal Trade of Tuko in the Philippines)

Tuko(gecko) are reptiles that can be found in tropical countries and are known to be carnivorous and having sticky footpads that allow them to climb vertical surfaces even glass. They are usually nocturnal and are known to be the only reptiles that use their voice for social interaction.

They help regulate the pest population as they feed on insects and worms. Larger species of such geckos hunt small birds and rodents. They play an important role in our ecosystem.

Unfortunately, there has been an alarming increase in the illegal trade of tukos in the Philippines and different countries in Asia. This is brought upon by the reports that such animals can cure AIDS, cancer, asthma, tuberculosis and impotence. These reports are unproven and have no scientific bases.

The trade of tukos in the Philippines is only allowed upon securing the appropriate permits issued by the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB). This is specified under Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. Violation of such mandate is punishable by imprisonment of up to four(4) years.

The decline in population of geckos has caused an imbalance in the ecosystem with the increase of the population of mosquitoes and other insects that are preyed upon by the tukos.

We need stop this senseless and misguided trade before things get out of hand and the effects become irreversible. The tukos, though not one the most aesthetically pleasing animals, deserve to be protected and live peacefully in the environment. They too have rights and are protected by our laws.
