Uzbekistan has promised to stop the use of torture tactics in its criminal justice system. However, according to Human Rights Watch,
they have still not put this policy into effect. The torture tactics conducted by authorities are atrocious and include
electric shocks, rape and sexual abuse, asphyxiation with gas and plastic bags and being immersed in boiling water. Furthermore, the government of Uzbekistan is denying detainees their human rights, such as access to lawyers.
Human rights abuses in the country have worsened over the years. Those arrested can be held for 72 hours by authorities before they see a judge. Courts also regularly impose sentences on detainees that are recommended by the government and do not allow habeas corpus hearings to be seen by the public. All of these policies blatantly undermine the human rights of the detainees.
Tell the Uzbekistan government that this is unacceptable.
We the undersigned demand that the government of Uzbekistan implement its promised policy of ceasing torture tactics in its criminal justice system. These torture tactics are not only appalling but violate the human rights of the detainees. Human rights abuses are increasing and Uzbekistan has one of the regions’ worst human rights record. This must stop as torture tactics and the justice system is unfair and unacceptable.
Please show your citizens that you will support and protect their rights. Show the world that you are dedicated to improving the human rights record in Uzbekistan.
