American Workers Deserve Pay for Overtime!

While hourly paid American workers are already receiving time and a half for time worked in excess of 40 hours, salaried workers typically do not receive this compensation. According to the Economic Policy Institute, income of middle class workers has steadily deteriorated over the years while recent economic recovery has only benefited the very wealthy. In other words, people working long hours are actually making less money than in years past! As a result, President Obama has requested an update to the earnings threshold for salaried workers.

According to a White House Press Release:

”President Obama announced that the Department of Labor will propose extending overtime pay to nearly 5 million workers. The proposal would guarantee overtime pay to most salaried workers earning less than an estimated $50,440 next year.”

Updating the overtime regulations are long overdue. At this writing, salaried employees who make as little as $23,660 a year are expected to work as many hours in excess of 40 hours as their employers ask without overtime pay. Raising this level will strengthen the middle class by paying them a fair wage for their hard work.

A strong middle class equals a strong economy and raising the wage threshold will improve incomes for millions of Americans! Let the President know that you support this intiative!

Dear President Obama,

I fully support your plans to raise the overtime threshold for hard working Americans. As you have pointed out, the current threshold is seriously outdated and does not support a strong and fair economy.
