Save Bear Bay Forest, Pender Harbour's Last Old Forest Ecosystem

Bear Bay Forest, home to Pender Harbour's last Old Forest ecosystem is set to be partially logged in Spring 2009 - Unless we can stand up in force and say NO!

Bear Bay Forest, in Pender Harbour, %uFFFDBritish Columbia Canada, is home to Pender Harbour's last old Forest Ecosystem* and the highest number of different ecosystems, some of them endangered, within an area of this size. %uFFFD Bear Bay Forest is also home to a small population of the Blue Listed Red-Legged Frog. %uFFFD
The proposed cut-block is uphill from and less then 200 meters away from fragile Coho Salmon runs in Mixal Creek. Local biologists are also deeply%uFFFD%uFFFDconcerned that silt from road-building and logging operations might smother historical spawning grounds of the endangered Sakinaw Lake Sockeye Salmon, which lie in shallow lake waters just off the mouth of Mixal Creek. %uFFFD

We the undersigned are requesting that you leave Bear Bay Forest alone so that it can be enjoyed by future generations.
The proposed cut block is inside an area that has been recognized by the Ministry of Environment, the SCRD and local conservation and interest groups as a unique forest with attributes that are both rare on the Sunshine Coast and red-listed. The BBSA believes that the recreational %uFFFDand educational opportunities that exist inside Bear Bay Forest are valuable enough to easily offset the short term monetary gain of logging the area. %uFFFD
