Thank you for supporting the request to Save the River. Te Wairoa (Wairoa) Te Tairawhiti and HB region is now quick to overflow causing flooding due to the now shallow river bed from the build up of silt over the years. Needs to be returned to the depth it once was, at least in the 1950's. The governments have allowed this to happen. SAVE WAIROA. IF THE BAR WAS BLOCKED THE WHOLE OF WAIROA COULD HAVE GONE UNDER. LUCKILY THE MIGHT OF THE RIVER WIDENED THE BAR. This request has been long standing and done by other Tangata Whenua and others in the past, so it's not the first time this has been asked of the powers that be.

Kia ora Koutou, Just refocusing on the petition. A copy of this has been provided to 2 boards of Inquiry that came into Wairoa, one commissioned from the Govt and another by the Hawkes Bay Regional Council (HBRC). Also a mention of this was made to Grant Robertson on his visit to Wairoa. Seems money is a major obstacle to this work. When the time is right I will send the petition to the Crown and HBRC and relevant committees. HBRC don't see the removal of silt part of protection. Kia ora ano.

IBALL PARK ESTIMATED figures without much info to the specialist for bathymetry survey from Te Wairoa river mouth to Te Reinga is $30k - $70k to survey the river bed. Bearing in mind the Tangata Whenua have to agree and direct in regards there areas.
2) To work out the depth of the mud it is estimated at $50-$100k (thousand). (incl hireage of equipment from Aussie to measure depth of silt etc.). Surely HBRC or Crown can afford this small amount from their budget.

Please share the petition to your Whanau (family) and friends. This will be most appreciated and is already having a positive impact. The HBRC 2nd in charge has agreed to work together amicably which is a step forward and in the right direction. One step at a time.
