I am writing to urgently seek your assistance regarding the imminent transfer of three Malaysian elephants, Dara ,Amoi and Kelat, who are reportedly scheduled to depart from Malaysia for Tennoji Zoo in Osaka very soon (expected departure: 10 March 2026).
Many wildlife supporters in Malaysia are deeply concerned about this transfer. These elephants are part of Malaysia's natural heritage, and there is strong fear that once they arrive in Japan, they will permanently become zoo assets used for exhibition rather than being protected in a natural environment or sanctuary.
Elephants are highly intelligent and social animals that require large natural spaces and proper social structures. Confining them to zoo environments has long been criticized by animal welfare experts due to the physical and psychological suffering it can cause.
Given the urgency of this situation, I respectfully ask if your organization could urgently look into this matter, raise awareness, and if possible, challenge or reconsider this transfer arrangement. Many concerned individuals hope that this agreement can be reviewed and that Dara/Amoi and Kelat can remain in, or be returned to, Malaysia rather than becoming permanent zoo exhibits in Japan.
There is growing concern that these elephants may be removed from their homeland without sufficient public awareness or discussion about their long-term welfare.
Your voice and advocacy for elephant welfare in Japan are highly respected, and many concerned individuals hope organizations like yours can help bring attention to this issue before it is too late.
