Demand Fair Representation for Women in New Libyan Congress

In a recent Libyan draft electoral law, only ten percent of the seats in a proposed Libyan constituent assembly would be reserved for women. In a country where women make up over fifty percent of the population, limiting their membership in the General National Congress to only 20 of 200 seats is outrageous.

Sign this petition to call on the Libyan Transitional Council to change the draft law to reflect fair representation for women in the new Congress.

Libyan women played a major part in the revolution that toppled Kadhafi's regime, but now their participation in the new government is being sidelined by the Transitional Council. As Libya transitions to democracy, women's concerns need representation at a national level.

Sign now to urge the Transitional Council to ensure fair representation for women by revising the draft law and by mobilizing and supporting women to serve in the national government.
We the undersigned call on you to change the draft electoral law to reflect fair representation for women in the new General National Congress. While the draft electoral law reserves only ten percent of the seats in the proposed constituent assembly for women, Libyan women make up over fifty percent of the population. Libyan women played a major part in the revolution that toppled Kadhafi's regime, and they deserve fair representation at a national level as Libya transitions to democracy. We urge you to revise the draft law to reflect this and to mobilize and support women to serve in the national government.
