Say NO to Public Handling of Bear Cubs

  • da: Nyack Clancy
  • destinatario: Michigan Governor Rick Snyder

In Michigan, Senate Bill 48 has been approved by the senate- the bill will allow the public to touch and pose for photos with bear cubs under 9 months old or weighing up 90 pounds.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums strongly opposite Senate Bill 48. “We are deeply concerned that the legislature would consider any bill that puts animals and people in serious jeopardy,” said Detroit Zoological Society Executive Director and CEO Ron Kagan. “Any reasonable person would be concerned that bears, at whatever age and size, are dangerous. It’s common sense to vote against this bill.”

Other concerns from groups are that even bears cubs can cause serious damage with their claws, presenting a danger to famies and children. Bears that become accustomed to people become a greater hazard to people as the grow. Additionally, close contact with cubs risks of exposure to disease, (salmonella or leptospirosis), which can be very serious to children and the elderly.

Tell Michigan Governor Rick Snyder you agree there are too many risks to the public- OPPOSE and veto Senate Bill 48.
