A year ago the former Spanish Parliament passed a new law on citizen security, also known as 'gag law', that tries to repress and intimidate citizens protesting against government policies and journalists covering protests and other social issues.
Since then, the balance has been terrible: more than 40,000 fines have been imposed, of which over 6,200 are for disrespecting the security forces and about 3,700 for disobeying and resisting authority. These fines are imposed unilaterally by police officers as a result of the slightest excuse.
But those more affected by the law are the journalists: they can be intimidated and coerced by police officers while they are just doing their job, and their cameras and photographs can be seized if a policeman says so.
The new Parliament emerged from the last election has approved the repeal of the law, but the caretaker government refuses to make it effective making all kind of excuses. We can not wait any more: sign this petition and tell the Popular Party government to listen to the majority of citizens and to derogate a law that takes us back to the worst times of the Franco dictatorship.
