No Data Centers in Newport News!
In early October 2025, Mayor Phillip Jones and other business leaders suggested that a site on the north side of Newport News (on Dozier Road) would be a good location for a potential data center. Data centers have become a major environmental and utility burden in Virginia. In fact, over a third of the world’s data centers are already located in Virginia! The AI boom has caused the tech industry to want to build more and more data centers, even as Dominion Energy is admitting it’ll have to increase electricity costs to residential customers because of rising demand. Plus, data centers can cause pollution and strip groundwater from their surroundings. Any claims that data centers bring jobs or lower taxes are significantly flawed; most data center jobs are temporary construction jobs, and any tax benefits will almost definitely be counteracted by rising electricity costs. We must NOT allow a data center to be built in Newport News - there are other ways to bring economic development to our city.
