As a former volunteer at Fundacion Hagnauer's Centro de Rescate Las Pumas, I know first hand of the excellent work these employees do rescuing, rehabilitating then releasing animals of the Costa Rican Rain Forest (THE most biodiverse gem on earth).
I was there in 2012 for 2 months and highway construction was hurting this touristic site THEN! With no admission tickets from bus tour groups ( they avoid the site due to construction hold ups) Las Pumas is now pleading to their community for donations of meat to feed the jaguars and pumas! They haven't the money! These already endangered animals could STARVE if we don't get action from the Ministry to get convince the Minister of Infrastructure to finish construction on this East/West bound highway in the next two months or else Las Pumas must close! This is a family run, non profit foundation. The land, pens and well organized site, there for 55 years, should not have to endure upheaval of moving locations. It is too hard on the animals of which there are 160 presently. The Minister needs to publicize, to help support them financially and to take responsibility for the exquisite animal life being PROPERLY cared for at Las Pumas. After all, it is MAN'S encroachment of their habitat, electrical wires killing howler monkies, farmers and their dogs injuring the wildlife! Man is responsible for putting these creatures there, now fulfill the duty!
In Canada, we BUILD BRIDGES for our wildlife to cross so they don't get hit by cars.
Speed this process of construction up because the world intends on volunteering at this important rescue centre or at least touring it to understand Costa Rica's biodiversity! Please sign the petition.
