Mississippi, Religious Freedom Doesn't Mean Discrimination Against LGBT!

  • da: Lynn Hamilton

We live in a rainbow world, but Mississippi law makers mean to keep their state in the shadows. A new state bill, touted as promoting religious freedom, will allow the state's institutions and individuals to discriminate against members of the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender community.

The so-called "Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act" basically says that it's a "burden" to accept diversity if your religion tells you it's better to hate. If signed into law by Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant, it will allow disgruntled conservatives to sue any time they are obliged to afford equal rights to an LGBT individual.

This bill was strongly opposed by the American Civil Liberties Union and other civil rights organizations. Tell Governor Bryant not to perpetuate hatred by signing this bill into law!

Dear Governor Bryant:

We the undersigned are dismayed by the passing of Senate Bill No. 2681, the so-called Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

This act purports to be all about freedom, but, in fact, it is about intolerance and even hate. It will polarize your state's population unnecessarily by encouraging people to sue instead of adapting their institutions to accommodate difference. This bill, if signed into law, represents a step backward from full civil rights for all people.

Please do not sign this bill! Doing so will only create more disunity and intolerance in Mississippi.
