Lower ASE Fines in Ajax for Fairness
Living in Ajax, ON, has been a gratifying experience. Still, the recent introduction of Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras had become a significant irritation, not just for me, but for many residents. As a retiree, driving used to be a joy, giving me the freedom to support local businesses and explore our community. However, the hefty fines imposed by these cameras have turned commuting into a form of voluntary taxation. Is it right that a minor speeding infraction, such as driving 60 km/h in a 40 km/h zone, leads to a $180 fine? This seems less about safety and more about revenue generation.
These fines are excessive for minor speed violations and impose a significant financial burden on many residents. They deter people from driving through ASE zones, directly impacting local businesses that rely on consumer traffic to thrive. Without adjustments, these cameras might inadvertently damage the vitality of Ajax's economy.
We propose three alternative options: firstly, lowering the fine to a more reasonable $50, reflecting the minor nature of most speed infractions. Secondly, consider the complete elimination of ASE cameras, which would bring back an increased police presence to manage speed limits more dynamically and effectively. Lastly, in cases where cameras are still in use, the fines should still be reduced to ensure that safety, not revenue, is the primary focus.
ASE fines create barriers that discourage people from visiting local shops, hindering economic growth. Ajax deserves a fair system that strikes a balance between safety and economic prosperity. I urge the town council to reconsider its stance, as enforcing fines of this magnitude only highlights the inefficiency of its governance.
We are calling on all residents of Ajax and the surrounding areas to support this initiative. By reducing fines or eliminating ASE cameras, we can promote a thriving local economy and ensure that safety efforts do not financially burden our community. Let's work together to advocate for a fairer, more economically sustainable approach to speed enforcement.
