No One Should Go Bankrupt Due to Being Sick or Injured. The U.S. Needs Medicare for All.

Right now in the U.S., approximately 85 million people either don't have health insurance, or are "underinsured" - a scenario where they may technically have access to some form of coverage, but it's insufficient to really help them in a time of dire need. That's a full quarter of the U.S. population. And this is in the richest country on planet Earth.

Sign the petition to demand that Congress finally do right by the American people, and pass the Medicare for All Act!

As you might expect, not having consistent, affordable access to healthcare has had disastrous consequences. Approximately 42% of people with cancer use up all of their life savings within 2 years of being diagnosed. On average, Americans' lives end 4 years earlier than their counterparts in other wealthy nations. Each year, 68,000 people die because they can't even afford the basic fees for going to a doctor at all. And, out of all wealthy nations on the planet, the U.S. has the highest rate of infant deaths before their first birthdays.

Yet Republicans are still pushing the baseless propaganda that says healthcare-for-all is "impossible." Plenty of data shows this is simply not true. Most developed countries in the world have some form of universal healthcare. And in most places, their healthcare is significantly cheaper - Americans spend 2-3x more on healthcare per person, compared with many other countries.

So what's holding us back? Corporate greed, obviously. Private, for-profit health insurance corporations like UnitedHealthcare and even for-profit hospital chains have spent decades lobbying Congress to make sure they can keep milking Americans for as much money as they're worth - right up until their final breaths.

Luckily, not all members of Congress are up for sale! Senator Bernie Sanders and Representatives Pramila Jayapal and Debbie Dingell have introduced a new bill called the Medicare for All Act. This important legislation would do what the U.S. should have done years ago - put the American people and their well-being first. The Act would ensure that every person has access to comprehensive healthcare services, including dental, vision, mental health services, and more. And it would ensure that people's health plans are no longer tied to their jobs, giving workers the freedom to change careers or find different employers without worrying that their families' literal lives will be at risk.

Putting billionaires' and corporations' profits above Americans' basic welfare is grotesque and unethical. But this bill could fix all that. Sign the petition to demand that the U.S. Congress get its priorities right and pass the Medicare for All Act!
