When natural habitats such as that of the mountain gorilla are destroyed, rainfall and weather patterns can be affected, areas can become more susceptible to flooding or drought, and huge amounts of carbon dioxide can be released into the atmosphere, accelerating the effects of climate change.
Today there are around 880 mountain gorillas in the wild but these extraordinary animals are still Critically Endangered and there is much left to do if we are to ensure their long-term survival.
