Demand Felony Classification for Animal Abuse, Neglect, Abandoment, and Murder.

In most states, animal abuse is classified as a misdemeanor and usually accompanied by a small fine, very little jail time, or no serious action at all. The first two punishments are figurative "slaps on the wrist".

Why is this the case? Animals are primarily regarded as property as opposed to living, breathing beings deserving of the same protection that is afforded to human beings.
