BC: Invest in Better Transit not More Roadways

  • da: Amelia Meister

Right now BC is considering a plan that would spend $3.5 billion dollars on building one 10-lane bridge. Proponents of the project argue that a larger road way between Richmond and Delta BC will decrease congestion and make commute times faster.

However, many studies have found that increasing roads does not decrease congestion. It only adds more cars to the road. In a time of climate crisis we need less cars on the roads not more. $3.5 billion could be spent on creating better and more reliable transit solutions between Richmond and Delta. Clearly the government of BC is behind in their commitment to addressing global climate disruption.

Sign today and let BC know that you take COP21 seriously and want transportation solutions that reflect the need to move to lower emissions and better transit system.

To the Honourable Mr Todd Stone,

I am writing today as a concerned citizen. Climate change affects us all. We can no longer be investing in transportation solutions that prioritize the personal vehicle. The George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project is an unacceptable investment of BC's infrastructure money.

It is widely known that larger roads do not lead to less congestion. We need only look at Toronto's 400 series highway congestion problems to understand, but if that was not enough, studies out of the University of Toronto has proven it. What we need is better transit solutions.

I know that investing the $3.5 billion estimated cost of a new bridge between Richmond and Delta is a better, long-term investment in the public's health. Investing in transit solutions also helps Canada come closer to meeting the COP21 targets set in Paris last year.
