Save Loddon's Moles!

The Norfolk village of Loddon is currently setting traps to kill moles which they consider to be a “pest.” According to Loddon Parish Council, the damage caused by these moles is creating a serious hazard.

It is cruel to kill these solitary creatures for doing what comes naturally. They create tunnels to obtain food, patrolling this tunnel twice a day to pick up the grubs that fall in. Once the tunnel is long enough, the mole stops digging and the molehills stop appearing. The damage caused is minimal and the moles’ activity actually creates good drainage – vital in wet weather.

In countries such as Sweden, the mole is fully protected by the law. However, the mole is NOT a protected species in the UK and there is no “Mole Protection Society.”

Moles are a valuable part of our wild heritage in the UK. They are peaceful animals who represent no danger to anyone. After consulting a humane wildlife expert, it has been suggested that a few volunteers could easily remove the molehills to eliminate the hazard. There is no need to kill the moles. Help save the Loddon moles!
