Period Products Are Officially Free in Scotland. It's Time the United States Follows Suit.

Huge victory in Scotland! The country made history by officially offering free menstrual products available in community centers, pharmacies, and youth clubs across the country. Following legislation approved in 2020, this move follows a global push to increase the access to tampons, pads, and cups around the world, recognizing them as a key part of basic hygiene and health. But while Scotland, South Korea, and Canada are moving towards a more equitable and feminist future, the United States -- one of the richest countries in the world -- is still charging money for products that should be a human right.

Sign now to demand that Congress pass a law to make menstrual products available in all public and governmental buildings for free!

Being unable to access period products can have devastating consequences. Menstrual hygiene is extremely important to personal health -- and also to a persons' ability to easily go to school, work, and take care of themselves. People with uteruses deserve autonomy and freedom, and having to spend hundreds of dollars a year to simply manage their period makes that difficult.

Not only are period products not free in the United States, but they are also subject to what advocates and organizers have coined the "pink tax." In many cases, products marketed with a "femme" look in the U.S. are literally more expensive than products marketed to/made for cis men. Yes, you read that right: there is gender-based price discrimination in the United States, and pink products are more likely to be more expensive.

Women's Equality Day is on August 26, and in honor of all people with uteruses who need period products, we must urge Congress to act. The United States is the wealthiest country in the history of the world, and it is long overdue for our legislators to start acting like it. We must make period products free and available to all who need them! Sign the petition now if you agree!
