Don't Let the FBI Label Trans Individuals as Domestic Terrorists and 'Nihilistic Violent Extremists'

Imagine being labeled a domestic terrorist just for living out your life as your most authentic self. That's a scenario that could become a reality, if the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) continues to cave to right-wing organization the Heritage Foundation's influence.

The organization behind the infamous Project 2025 document, the Heritage Foundation has wielded a tremendous amount of influence over the Trump Administration so far. Already - in concert with Trump's team - it has accomplished nearly half of its Project 2025 policy goals. And now, one of its current top-priority goals is: convincing the FBI to label trans people as "nihilistic violent extremists."

According to FBI director Kash Patel, the agency has recently begun evaluating domestic terrorism threats through a new category called "nihilistic violent extremism." This category supposedly describes people or groups with a "deep hatred of society." Now, the Heritage Foundation is reportedly urging Patel to officially add "Transgender Ideology-Inspired Violent Extremism" to this list. And sources close to Patel say he is genuinely considering doing so.

Trans people are already vilified and demonized as it is - yet Trump's administration and radical right-wing groups seem determined to continue to target them. The Heritage Foundation is even using false statistics to try and paint trans people as threats to society - when it's the opposite. Trans people are far more likely to be the victims of violence than to be perpetrators. In fact, trans people face some of the highest rates of violence and victimization in the whole U.S.

But right-wing organizations - and even FBI Director Patel himself - are explicitly using the Charlie Kirk murder as an excuse to scapegoat trans people. During a Congressional hearing, Patel said "We're looking at the entire spider web" of supposed trans radicals as part of its investigation of Kirk's death. Members of Trump's administration have repeatedly written posts on social media trying to tie trans people to mass violence and shootings in the U.S. But research shows that only around 0.1% of mass shootings from the past decade were perpetrated by trans people. Instead, the vast majority of people who become mass-shooters are cisgender men.

If the Heritage Foundation were to get its way - following a shocking trend of 'success' so far - then people who are simply trying to live their lives as their truest, most authentic selves would suddenly be classified as a type of domestic terrorist. We don't have to tell you what that means: surveillance, criminalization, arrests, and overall danger.

You might think this Heritage Foundation labeling idea is far-fetched now - but look how many other shocking, unspeakable things have already come to pass. We must speak out for our trans friends, neighbors, and loved ones before they're pushed even further into harm's way. Sign the petition to demand the FBI refuse to bend to the Heritage Foundation's influence! It must refuse this request to label trans people as "nihilistic violent extremist" domestic terrorists.
