Somaliland : Nadra Mohamed Jama who has been in prison for weeks without charge should be released immediately. This Somaliland women , dubbed as the SMS lady has been in prison for the last 28 days without charge for allegedly sending offensive text messages to minister Hirsi Haji Ali. She has been brought to court in the capital , Hargeisa several times but not charged and is kept in detention by the CID.
Miss Nadra was brought to Hargeisa court twice before without any evidence against her. She was gain brought to court today for the third time and without any hearing or court ruling
This is in breach of her rights and sets precedence for other similar abuses against Somaliland women in the future. This does not help Somaliland democratisation processes and its commitment to freedom of speech. The minister in question here needs to show tolerance and restraint and the public should not keep silent about the injustice against this lady.
It is about time that the people of Somaliland speak against the injustice done to this lady and let their voices heard.
We call upon the Somaliland government to immediately release Nadra Mohamed Jama and protect the vulnerable Somaliland women against the power abusers among the government officials.
