Florida: Repeal Law That Jails Unmarried Couples For Living Together!

In Florida, it's illegal for unmarried couples to live together. This archaic law isn't just on the books, it's actually enforced -- 700 people have been charged under this law between 2006 and 2011!

People shouldn't have their lives ruined for doing something as common as cohabiting. Please sign the petition to ask Florida to pass SB 1078, which would repeal this archaic law!

Statute 798.02 states that any unmarried man and woman who "lewdly and lasciviously associate or cohabit together" are guilty of a second-degree misdemeanor. It is punishable by a $500 fine and up to 60 days in jail.

The state has no right to determine who can live with whom, and under what circumstances -- but in Florida, it has been since the law was enacted in 1868.

The kicker? Public officials themselves don't even follow the law, yet prosecute others for breaking it. In 2012, a “concerned citizen” called for Hallandale Beach City Commissioner Keith London, who was living with his girlfriend, to be prosecuted under the law, but officials refused to investigate.
